Legras (Verreries de Saint-Denis) was a big glass manufacture which was founded in 1864, when Auguste Legras became the owner of the Saint-Denis glass factories, that he made prosper with his brother François-Théodore until it became in the end of the 19th century the biggest glass factory in France, for "low end" works. The art glasswork, although of a lower importance, was however present, and of a very fine mastery. A "prestigious" production was parallely made. Auguste Legras was a fine connoisseur of glassmaking techniques, and as such he filed a considerable amount of patents, and developped proper and innovative techniques: le "Vert Nil", the colored glasses with pastel tones, the gold damasked glass, but also the acid etching. Because of the public infatuation of the latter, this technique was generalised in art glass factories. The son of Auguste Legras, Charles Legras, took over the business in 1909, but the shutdown of the factory during WWI, as well as the lack of innovation and visionary spirits, made the production less varied, and eventually made it go downhill. The glass group from Lyon Souchon Neuvesel then absorbed the company in 1924.
