Maurice Mareels (1893-1976) was a belgian painter. Maurice Mareels studied at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles from 1911 to 1914 and from 1918 to 1919. He was the student of Herman Richir. Later he became a drawing professor at the Académie des Arts
Maurice Mareels (1893-1976) was a belgian painter. Maurice Mareels studied at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles from 1911 to 1914 and from 1918 to 1919. He was the student of Herman Richir. Later he became a drawing professor at the Académie des Arts décoratifs d'Ixelles. He painted landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. His landscapes were mainly located in Campine (mainly in Genk) and in Brittany. In 1913, he became a militiaman at the Compagnie universitaire. He then had the possibility to continue his studies. In 1914 Maurice Mareels was hurt during the Yser battle. For the rest of the wartime, he was appointed to administrative army work in Calais. He made at that time several paintings representing the Yser battle. Maurice Mareels published a book "Les carnets d'un fantassin de 1914" which deals with his military time. He also made one of the 12 engraving of the album "Autour de Bruxelles" (1941).
