Vassil (1949-) is a self-taughtman sculptor, who was born from a modest family in eastern Paris. He began getting interested in art quite young, particularly in painting, that he would practice as soon as he would receive his wages , to buy material. However, he discovered sculpture quite late. Far from being scared by conventions, he started sculpting stone. He dedicated his whole freetime to it, with a rage to express himself. In this search for absolute which characterizes Vassil, the stone work became marble work, allowing more precision in the relief. After 5 years of exploration of the material, Vassil radically changed the technique: he started modelling. From that moment, his work became more animal-orientated. Pieces like Bianga and Serengeti made him win several awards. His choice of becoming an animal sculptor only became definitive when he turned to bronze. As an expressionnist, he explores the inmost depths of the animal soul, through very expressive portraits, where lies the originality of his work, and which marks his singularity compared to other animal sculptors.
