Biography of the artist:
Keith Haring is an American artist born in 1958 and died in 1990. He belonged to the Free Figuration movement. If he follows since 1976 studies in art at Pittsburgh and New York, he was particularly interested in semiotics and looks for different ways of using language and writing through drawing. Pierre Alechinsky Matisse Jean Dubuffet Christo are his artistic references. He uses the line as the red thread of his discourse. He develops by assembling geometric lines, symbols and hieroglyphs into a style and a vocabulary unique to him. Keith Haring is an artist rooted in reality. The themes that he talks about in his work range from technology to teleevangelism to sexuality to avidity to poverty to violence and racism. He finds his first platform of expression of creation in empty publicity lots in the New York subway. He literally inundated them with drawings, notably the famous "radical baby". Thanks to this Andy Warhol and the art dealer Tony Shafrazi noticed him. The latter offered him his first great exhibition, marking the beginning of his international career. At the same time, he frequented assiduously Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. Together, they lend a new dynamic to the world of art. In 1986, Haring opens the "Pop Shop" in the Soho neighborhood. In this shop he painted entirely in black and white he sells T-shirts, toys, posters and many derived products of his works. He therefore makes art accessible to the greatest number. Keith Haring was also a great cultural activist. He is engaged against the spread of AIDS and rights for the rights of gay people against social discrimination. He creates a foundation in 1989. Haring died from AIDS at 31 years old leaving behind him a colossal work whereas he only worked during a decade. Amongst innumerable drawings, paintings and sculptures the artist also painted frescoes in American and European hospitals as well as a fragment of the Berlin wall, West side.
