Auguste Nicholas Caïn (1821-1894), born on November the 10th, 1821 in Paris, died in the same city on August 25th, 1894, was a french animal sculptor. He studied under Rude, Guionnet, and Pierre-Jules Mêne, whose daugther he married in 1852. He first exhibited at the
Auguste Nicholas Caïn (1821-1894), born on November the 10th, 1821 in Paris, died in the same city on August 25th, 1894, was a french animal sculptor. He studied under Rude, Guionnet, and Pierre-Jules Mêne, whose daugther he married in 1852. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1846. Between 1846 and 1888, he exhibited 38 different works at the Salon. Afterwards, he mainly concentrated his efforts on monuments, among which: the Chiens de meute at the Château de Chantilly, Le Lion de Nubie et sa proie at the Jardin du Luxembourg (Paris), and Le Tigre et le Paon at the Gardens of Tuileries. He is the father of painters and writers Georges Cain and Henri Cain.
