Louis Mathieu Verdilhan (1875-1928) is a french painter. His younger brother is the painter and sculptor André Alexandre Verdilhan. Louis Mathieu Verdilhan came from a poor family. He did a traineeship with a house painter starting from 1895 in Marseille. It is really in 1902
Louis Mathieu Verdilhan (1875-1928) is a french painter. His younger brother is the painter and sculptor André Alexandre Verdilhan. Louis Mathieu Verdilhan came from a poor family. He did a traineeship with a house painter starting from 1895 in Marseille. It is really in 1902 that his artistic career started with an exhibition followed by another one at the palais des architectes on Avenue du Prado. He regularly exhibited in Paris from 1906. In 1909 he spent six mois in Versailles where he made numerous paintings. When he was mobilized in Toulon, he met Albert Marquet who had a lot of influence on him, but also André Suarès and Antoine Bourdelle. After the First World War, he lived in Aix-en-Provence, then Cassis and Toulon. On March the 16th, 1919, he married Hélène, daughter of the painter Alfred Casile. His fame increased, and he even exhibited in New York. He made for the city of Marseille a painting on a panel of the Marseille Opera. This painting represents the celebration of the French National Day (14th of July) in Marseille. It was criticized on the occasion of the Opera's inauguration. He died of cancer on December, 15th, 1928.
