Mali - Dogon mask

Dogons zoomorphic mask
about 60 years old

These masks are used during the Dama, funeral, ceremonies. The face is characterized by three types of scarifications on the forehead that are the symbols of water, two big rectangular eyes and
upper
semi-circular ears. The space between the face and the beak shows the animal function, here the monkey (but the bird and crocodile are quite similar).

Material: hard wood, typical in the Sahel region, with maximum dessiccation.
Oval holes for handling the neck cover and holes for the support bit provided for the teeth.

Dogon : Dogon people live in Mali, more precisely on the Bandiagara cliff. The most valued pieces are statues and ritual masks worn during the "Sigui", a ritual danse organised every 60 years.
