Ancient Greece
Hellenistic period, 3rd-1st century BC
Terracotta Face
Dimensions: 3 x 4 cm
Dimensions with the base: 11 x 3 cm
Provenance: Former Parisian private collection. Piece acquired in an art gallery specialized in archeology.
Work presented on a metal base.
The face has an elaborate hairstyle with braided hair, surrounded by a hair band on the top of the forehead. The ears are adorned with jewels. The face is rounded down with thin lips and a small but
prominent chin. The profile on the bridge of the nose in the direct prolongation of the forehead strongly brings to mind the classical Greek sculptural style of a later period. The eyes' deep sockets
and the outline of a half-smile lend this face an austere expression. Could this be Aphrodite?
