Aboriginal painting from Australia, Paddy Stewart JAPALTJARRI, "Ngarlu Jukurrpa", 2006, acrylic on canvas
In this canvas the great aboriginal painter Paddy Stewart (c.1938-2013) retranscribes a religious ceremony still practised today which aims to prevent the members of his clan from the dangers of an illegal relationship. The legend tols that during the Dream Time, a man seduced a woman who was forbidden to him because of clanic laws. As punishment, the two lovers were transformed into two rocks that we can see today on the Ngarlu site. The "U" shaped that we find at the centre of the work represents the participants of the ceremony during which the episodes of the myth are played. The four strange patterns placed as a star evoke spindles on which hair tresses are rolled and are spinned while singing and dancing.
This canvas is accompanied by certificates of authenticity from the Yuendumu art centre
