Items corresponding to Post War & Modern Art - Paintings - Charles Verbrugghe

Charles Verbrugghe (1877-1975) is a post-impressionnist belgian artist. He was born in Bruges, but moved to Paris in 1905 to study painting, and settled in Montmartre where he lived until his death. Autodidact, he learnt painting by drawing from life, and gained over time a high knowledge of old masters, thanks to his museums visits. In Paris, he became friend with Kees van Dongen, with whom he arrived from Rotterdam, and met Monet, Renoir, Degas, Picasso and Utrillo. He spent every summer in Bruges, which can explain the large amount of paintings representing the somptuous medieval flemish city. He used vibrant colors, and bathed his paintings with voluptuous light. His work was very much influenced by his encounter with the parisian impressionnists.
