Roman (or Romain) de Tirtoff (1892-1990) was also known under the pseudonym Erté (based on his initials R.T.).
He was born in St-Petersburg in a large family whose roots go up to 1548. At five years old, he draws his first costume. In 1912, Roman de Tirtoff was sent to Paris to learn the job of draghtsman.
From 1915, he obtains his first important contract, which lasts 22 years, with the magazine Harper's Bazaar. He then pursues a career as a designer of costumes and theatre sets. Erté is particularly
known for his elegant fashion drawings reflecting the Art Déco period in which he lived.
