Linogravure : La linogravure est un procédé de gravure proche de la gravure sur bois, utilisant une matrice en linoleum. Encrée, cette matrice permet de reproduire le motif. Cette technique a été très utilisée par Matisse et Picasso.
Henri Matisse : Henri Matisse est un peintre, dessinateur, graveur et sculpteur français né à Cateau-Cambrésis en 1869. Il fut le chef de file du fauvisme. Il commence à s'intéresser à la peinture impressionniste qu'il découvre en 1897 au musée du Luxembourg. À partir de 1900, Matisse travaille à l'Académie de la Grande Chaumière sous la direction d'Antoine Bourdelle et fréquente l'atelier d'Eugène Carrière. Il y fait la connaissance d'André Derain et de Jean Puy. Il expose au Salon des indépendants (1901) et participe à la première édition du Salon d'automne (1903). Il expose en 1904 chez Ambroise Vollard et participe au Salon des indépendants l'année suivante. L'été de 1905, il séjourne à Collioure en compagnie de Derain. Au Salon d'automne de 1905, l'accrochage de ses œuvres aux cotés de celles d'Albert Marquet, Vlaminck, Derain et Kees van Dongen provoque un scandale par les couleurs pures et violentes posées en aplat sur leurs toiles. Le critique Louis Vauxcelles compare l'endroit à une « cage aux fauves » donnant ainsi naissance au fauvisme. L'artiste réalise plusieurs grandes expositions à travers le monde. Ses œuvres sont exposées à Moscou, Berlin, Munich, Londres ou New York... En 1952 a lieu l'inauguration du musée Matisse du Cateau-Cambrésis. L'artiste meurt deux ans plus tard à Nice.
